As communities and municipalities look to support and reinforce the sense of community within their localities, administrators are recognizing that the quality and distinctiveness of their built environment plays an increasingly important role in engaging the general public and their neighbourhood. By creating spaces that are unique and reflective of their specific settings, todays libraries can become more than just a collection of books, creating ‘common places’ within our diverse communities. Library Planning and Design in a digital era needs to respond to the rapidly shifting landscape that is contemporary library design. By addressing both the social and technological aspects in which information is communicated and consumed in todays public environments, library design needs to be accessible, adaptable, flexible and engaging environments that promote public use and support active and collaborative community engagement.
The role and adaption of libraries within our project experience will be told through the eyes of one person’s journey from childhood to senior ages and how both people and libraries grow together. We will expand on how library design has adapted over those years in the digital era.
Our presentation will highlight past and current projects, within the last two decades, ranging from size and location within Manitoba municipalities, grade schools, to City of Winnipeg urban settings and beyond to post-secondary institutional campuses
