Who says libraries are irrelevant and our physical collections are dead? Not a mid-career librarian at the University of Winnipeg, who jumped from Head of Library Systems to Head of Collections almost two years ago. He has never been more active or engaged with his community. From a retention project, to dealing with catastrophes, to weeding, to inventory, to processing donations, to assessing the reference collection, print serials and microfilm collections, to taking new approaches to the budget formula, he has been taking collective action, working together with those inside and outside the library to build much needed vitality back into the library and its physical collections. Taking even the smallest opportunity to talk to stakeholders face-to-face and taking them directly to the space has really help to engage and inspire a renewed sense of place and interest in our physical collections.
